Ironic Jaguar: Homage to Richard Rorty
This is a Jaguar. At first glance, it is almost complete abstraction – it doesn't even have eyes. But if you look closely – its eyes are in place. And it is studying you attentively. And it is sticking its tongue out at you – clearly teasing. Though – it is waving its paw quite amiably.
Yes, our Jaguar is somewhat anthropomorphic.
Perhaps there is some reference here to H. G. Wells's «The Island of Doctor Moreau»? Or to Borges's work, «The Sower's Message»? Or – to Nikolai Gumilyov's poem «The Jaguar»?
Moreover – for the Mayans, the Jaguar symbolized strength, power. And also, a connection with the otherworldly realm and all sorts of mysticism. An allusion to «the cat – Bastet/Sekhmet/Tefnut – the triune Goddess Hecate» suggests itself, doesn't it?
Probably that is why our Jaguar is depicted against the backdrop of the Moon. Because night is the time of dark forces and witchcraft.
…and the constellation Scorpio above it – is the zodiac sign of the author of the work. …hence, as an option – this is a self-portrait. An inner essence. But, perhaps not.
And it is simply a Jaguar against the backdrop of the Moon…

Ироничный Ягуар Посвящение Ричарду Рорти
Это Ягуар. На первый взгляд, это почти полная абстракция – у него даже глаз нет. Но, если присмотреться – глаза у него на месте. И он внимательно вас изучает. И показывает вам язык – явно дразнится. Хотя – лапой машет вполне дружелюбно.
Да, наш Ягуар несколько антропоморфный.
Может, здесь есть некая отсылка к «Острову доктора Моро» Герберта Уэлса? Или к произведению Борхеса, «Сообщение сеятеля»? Или – к стихотворению Николая Гумилёва «Ягуар»?
А ещё – у индейцев майя Ягуар символизировал силу, власть. И связь с потусторонним миром и всякую прочую мистику. Напрашивается сама собой аллюзия «кошка – Бастет/Сехмет/Тефнут – триединая Богиня Геката, не правда ли?
Наверное, поэтому наш Ягуар изображен на фоне Луны. Ибо ночь – время тёмных сил и колдовства.
…и созвездие Скорпиона над ним – это зодиакальный знак автора работы. …отсюда, как вариант – это автопортрет. Внутренняя сущность. Но, может быть, нет.
И это – просто Ягуар на фоне Луны…
